Book Review: The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev

Holy crap! This book ripped my heart out and put it back together. Why did I wait so long to read another Sonali Dev book?

Where do I even start?

Ms. Dev’s writing is beautiful. I can easily picture her characters and their world. Ria is a really icy character, but I completely understand her because of the writing. I have a love-hate relationship with her inclusion of food. She weaves in food and cooking into scenes in a way that feels real and showcases Indian (and Indian-American) culture. Why do I hate it? Because it makes me super hungry.

Next, let’s talk characters. Ria is a Bollywood actress and she’s viewed as an ice princess. I want to avoid spoilers so talking about her is a little hard. She deals with some difficult situations from when she was a young girl. Her struggles really hit me. She’s cold and pushes people away to protect them. That is not my favorite thing to read, but it worked here. Vik was harder for me to like initially, but I ended up falling in love with him. He is such a good person, friend, and nephew. The side characters were great, too. Ria’s aunt was amazing and I want her in my life.

The romance is a second chance romance which is one of my favorite tropes. There’s also some friends-to-lovers because Ria and Vik grew up spending their summers together. It may have been a tad slow. When there is so much angst I do start to get frustrated. I just want people to have conversations. But I was 100% committed to their romance and story.

I loved spending time with these characters and culture different than my own. There is a wedding during a huge portion of this story. It was great to read about all the activities surrounding an Indian wedding. And Ms. Dev makes me want to really immerse myself in all things Indian.

Thanks for reading!

August Wrap-Up (2019)

I read even more in August than in July-at least by page count. Twenty books were read in both. I guess I did technically DNF two books in August. I’m just so surprised, because the Reading Rush really pushed me in July.

And I found another top read of the year-The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev. That read actually kicked off a bunch of great and quick reads. There may have been a few sleepless nights. That sucks because sleep is important, but it is nice to read something so engaging.

Here are the books I read in August.

Book Review: How to Love a Duke in 10 Days by Kerrigan Byrne

how to love synopsis.png

I’ve been putting off writing this review because I have no idea how to explain my thoughts. But here we go.

This is an intense story with some difficult content to read. It practically opens with a rape scene. Then, Alex has to deal with that throughout the story and her life. That’s what made it so hard to read. Here life and reaction to what happened was so raw and heartbreaking.

Alex is a compelling character I enjoyed reading about. Piers was also great. I love a strong and big hero who has a gentle heart. Their romance was sweet and decent. Toward the end it did feel a little rushed.

Alex has two friends from school which I loved. I’m a huge fan of positive friendships in my fiction. These three care so much about each other. I assume the books in the series will be about those ladies and I’m definitely excited to see where their stories go.

There is a mystery and suspense element to the story. It kept me guessing and I felt the tension. It isn’t my favorite thing in my romance, but it worked and I don’t have any complaints.

I’m happy to have spend time with these characters and am excited to read more.

Thanks for reading!

Book Review: One Night in Scotland by Karen Hawkins

one night in scotland synopsis.png

This was a perfectly average historical romance. I’m starting to think that’s just how I’m going to fell about all Karen Hawkins’ books. I also feel like I have read this exact book before (but I know I havent’).

I like a scarred character, so I was predisposed to like this hero. He’s scholarly which I did like reading about. Mary, the heroine, is too. However, neither felt as developed as they could have been.

Speaking of development, the romance wasn’t that great. Ok. that my be a little extreme. Angus and Mary have chemistry and I do buy them as a couple. But the interactions weren’t as well-developed as they could’ve been. It was like they moved throughout the physical aspects of their relationship without the proper emotions. I think I just wanted them to talk to each other more.

The overall story line about the Hurst amulet and family is compelling. I want to know where that story will go and how it will be resolved. But if all the books will be 3-star reads, I’m not sure it’s worth my time. We’ll see at some point.

Thanks for reading!

July Wrap-Up (2019)

July was another great reading month. Shout out to audio books really helping with that. The Reading Rush also had a big impact. I am so close to completing my GoodReads goal for 2019.

Normally, around this time of year my reading starts to have a big drop-off. I don’t feel like that is going to happen. That’s really exciting because there are so many books I want to read and listen to. I’m very excited to keep up this reading pace. Overall, they’ve been good reads, too.

Here are the books I read in July.

Book Review: Let's Get Textual by Teagan Hunter

Let’s Get Textual by Teagan Hunter

Let's Get Textual blog post.png
let's get textual synopsis.png

This was such a treat. It was adorable and I really liked the characters and romance. And I definitely want to read more Teagan Hunter books in the future.

I’m a huge fan of textual communication in my fiction, so I definitely loved all the texting between Delia and Zach. They had great banter and those interactions really helped show their personalities along with creating a foundation for their romance.

Speaking of, I really liked the romance. It was light and easy to cheer for. An angsty romance has it’s place, but ones like this always make me smile. And the baby goat! That whole story line was adorable and I liked what it added to the romance and story in general.

There were some great friendships in here which I love. It also contributed to some sequel bait which I am here for.

Thanks for reading!

Spring Wrap-Up (2019)

Since I post my seasonal TBR, I thought I would do a little wrap-up post. I completed four of the five books and DNF’d one. According to my ratings, The Night Circus was the best. And I did enjoy reading the other three. None are new faves and I don’t need to re-read them. I did get to read 3 new authors which was nice. Here are the five books I read and my ratings.

Book Review: Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey

Exclusively Yours blog post.png
exclusively yours synopsis.png

I’ve been hearing about the greatness that is the Kowalski family for years and this did not disappoint. This is a story about Joe and Keri reconnecting-lord knows I love a reunited lovers story-but there’s really three stories weaved in. And I really enjoyed all three of them. It made it a real family story which I am also a fan of.

I’m not a huge fan of authors in books. It always feels like the author is trying to insert themselves. This didn’t feel that way. Maybe because the author character was male or more of a horror/thriller author. Joe was a really great guy. He has some darkness in his past but it wasn’t a particularly angsty story. And he wasn’t jaded and woman-hating. Keri was likable enough but she did get on my nerves on occasion. I did like seeing her interact with the whole Kowalski family.

The romance was cute and well paced. It takes place in a short period of time but the fact that they dated in high school helps stop it from feeling rushed. And I liked the semi-forced proximity of the story. They are stuck in a constrained area-a campground-but because the whole Kowalski family was around it didn’t feel like they lost agency which I often see as a problem with that trope. And I liked how Ms. Stacey used the interview questions as a character development tool. I kind of wish their were more questions.

This was a fun and quick read. I’m loving the Kowalskis and am excited to read Kevin’s story. Thankfully, I already own it!

Thanks for reading!
